Testosterone affects energy, mood, muscle and libido. One reading is a starting point, not a verdict.
What is testosterone?
Testosterone is the main male sex hormone, present in both sexes. In men it is made in the testes, in women in the ovaries and adrenal glands.
A standard blood test measures total testosterone: the bound and unbound portions combined. That total is a useful starting point, but how much is actually available for your body to use depends on other factors too.
Why timing decides your result
A morning sample, before about eleven, is the standard. If yours was taken late, it is worth repeating properly.
What it affects
In men, testosterone supports energy, mood, muscle and libido. A low level can show up in any of these.
In women, the level is far lower and read differently. There, a high reading matters more than a low one.

How a result is read
A low result in men
A low reading can explain low energy, low libido or lost muscle, and we'd confirm it with a repeat morning sample before acting on it.
One low result is not a diagnosis. A single number, taken once, is not enough to act on, and symptoms matter just as much as the figure.
A high result in women
In women, it's a high reading that gets our attention, and it may prompt a check for polycystic ovary syndrome.
It can come with acne, unwanted hair growth, or irregular cycles, and those symptoms help guide what happens next. As with the men's picture, we read it alongside your other hormones rather than in isolation.
Read it with SHBG
Testosterone travels bound to a protein called SHBG, and only the unbound part is active in the body. So your doctor reads it with SHBG and free testosterone.
This matters especially with insulin resistance, which lowers SHBG and can make a normal total testosterone look better on paper than the real picture underneath.
What can lower it
Excess weight, poor sleep, and heavy alcohol use can all lower testosterone, as can certain medications and illnesses.
Addressing those often helps more than people expect. Ageing lowers it slowly and normally, and a gradual dip with age is expected, not a disease in itself.
When to retest
We'd confirm a low or high result with a second morning sample, since levels naturally vary day to day.
An illness or a rough week can move a single reading. Read the trend with your doctor, not one value.
What low testosterone is not
A normal dip with age is not a disease to reverse. Chasing an ever higher number is not the goal.
Feeling tired does not by itself mean low testosterone. The causes of fatigue are many and usually more ordinary.
A word on supplements
Over the counter boosters rarely deliver on their claims, and most don't have solid evidence behind them.
The things that actually work cost less and are more familiar: managing weight, improving sleep, staying active, and cutting back on alcohol.
If you're genuinely experiencing symptoms, it's worth seeing a doctor rather than reaching for a supplement.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if low energy, low libido or lost muscle persist, especially if they are affecting daily life.
Bring along the timing of any past test. A late in the day sample may just need repeating properly. Do not start treatment on the strength of one number.
