How does genetic testing work?
Genetic testing works by analysing a small sample of your DNA, from a swab or a blood draw, to read specific genes linked to your health. At PROTOCOL, the sample is taken in clinic and analysed by our lab partners, with your results saved to your PROTOCOL record. NutriReady and MammoReady use a quick buccal swab; CardioStrands and NeuroStrands use a blood sample, which can be taken at the same visit as your Core Health Test.
Is there a DNA test for nutrition and vitamins?
Yes, NutriReady is a nutrition DNA test that shows how your genes affect the way your body processes nutrients and vitamins. It helps explain recurring flags in your Core Health Test such as low Vitamin D, B12, Folic Acid, iron or ferritin, and raised triglycerides or cholesterol, by showing whether the cause is genetic or dietary.
What is a BRCA genetic test?
A BRCA genetic test reads the BRCA1, BRCA2 and PALB2 genes to show your inherited, lifetime risk of breast cancer. At PROTOCOL, this is MammoReady, a simple swab; it reads inherited risk, which is different from the cancer markers (CA15.3 / CA125) in your Core Health Test that look for possible existing disease.
Is high cholesterol genetic?
Yes, high cholesterol can be inherited, a condition called Familial Hypercholesterolaemia. At PROTOCOL, the CardioStrands test checks for it, and it's often recommended when your Core Health Test shows raised cholesterol.
What does an APOE test tell me about Alzheimer's risk?
Alzheimer's can be hereditary, and an APOE test shows whether you carry gene variants linked to a higher risk of late-onset Alzheimer's; it is a risk estimate, not a diagnosis. At PROTOCOL, this is NeuroStrands, and every result includes genetic counselling to help you understand what it means.
Are genetic tests accurate?
Genetic tests read your DNA, which doesn't change, so the result itself is highly reliable. What a test gives you is a risk or predisposition, not a diagnosis, which is best understood with guidance from your care team or a genetic counsellor.
Can I take a genetic test with my health screening?
Yes, you can add any genetic test to your Core Health Test screening, or take it on its own. We recommend doing it with your Core Health Test so your doctor has the full picture, and you get the bundled price whether you add it at checkout or your PROTOCOL doctor recommends one at a later visit.
What is genetic counselling?
Genetic counselling is a session with a trained counsellor or doctor who explains what your result means for you and your family, and what to do next. At PROTOCOL, CardioStrands and NeuroStrands include it as standard; NutriReady results are reviewed with your Health Coach, and for MammoReady counselling is arranged if a result is elevated.
